Capital Metro Plans to Expand Service to Increase Mobility During SXSW  

AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 27, 2013) — SXSW 2013 is around the corner, and Capital Metro encourages the community to save money and reduce stress by riding public transportation during the 10-day festival, March 8-17.

To accommodate the influx of visitors to the city, as well as meet the needs of Capital Metro’s regular local riders, the agency plans to expand its services March 8-17, including increased frequency and expanded hours for some services.

“Whether you’re a SXSW diehard, or just trying to get to work, Capital Metro is going to be the best way to get around during the festival,” said Linda S. Watson, Capital Metro president/CEO. “We’re making some service improvements this year based upon our past experience with SXSW, as well as some things we learned from Formula 1, to help keep people moving throughout the city.”

In addition to regular bus, rail and paratransit service, Capital Metro will offer the following additional options to help riders:

• Increased frequency on MetroAirport – Route 100 will travel to and from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and downtown every 15 minutes throughout the festival, March 8-17.
• Expanded hours and increased frequency on MetroRail – Hours will be expanded on Saturday, March 9 and 16. During the week, March 11-15, midday frequency will nearly double, and riders will be able to catch a train every 34 minutes. During SXSW, trains will run:

o       Monday – Thursday, March 11-14: 6 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

o       Friday, March 8 & 15: 6 a.m. - midnight

o       Saturday, March 9 & 16: 10 a.m. - midnight

o       No MetroRail service on Sunday, March 10 & 17

In addition to Park & Ride lots at Leander, Lakeline, and Howard stations, temporary parking during SXSW will also be available near Kramer Station, courtesy of City Electric Supply, located at 2540 Brockton Drive.

• Late night options – Catch a Night Owl or E-Bus during SXSW. Night Owls run from midnight until 3 a.m., every night except Sundays (Monday mornings). The Night Owl routes were revamped in January and now offer 30-minute frequency. Additionally, Capital Metro will provide E-Bus service during both weekends of SXSW. E-Bus routes 410, 411, and 412 run Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, from 8:30 p.m. to 3 a.m.

To facilitate greater mobility downtown during SXSW, most downtown routes will be detoured and accessible along Guadalupe (southbound) and Lavaca (northbound), March 8-17. MetroAirport will travel along Congress Ave. through downtown to provide better access to downtown hotels.

Detailed detour information by route, in addition to a wealth of other SXSW-related transit information, maps and the online trip planner, is available on Capital Metro’s SXSW website, capmetro.org/sxsw2013. Other useful tools for information about routes, schedules, detours and trip planning include QR codes at bus stops and the GO Line at (512) 474-1200. Riders can also receive next-arrival times and trip directions by text message with Dadnab, and connect with Capital Metro staff on Facebook and Twitter (@CapMetroATX).

Capital Metro anticipates very strong ridership during SXSW. In fact, MetroRail saw record-setting ridership on March 17, 2012, with 7,316 boardings, and bus routes were also at-capacity. To facilitate safety, mobility and good customer service, Capital Metro volunteers will assist riders at the busiest rail stations and bus stops. The transit agency will also add service on routes 1, 3 and 10 to address overcrowding. To help alleviate crowding on Routes 7 and 20 along Riverside Dr. during SXSW, MetroAirport will make four additional stops on Riverside between Pleasant Valley and Congress.

Capital Metro encourages riders to know their options should they encounter a full bus or train, especially riders traveling with bikes. Capital Metro buses are equipped with bike racks that hold two bikes each. MetroRail trains are limited to eight bikes per train (four per compartment) when trains are full. Signs at each rail station will identify nearby bus service, and all MetroRail stations provide limited bike parking.

Capital Metro Planea Expandir Servicio Para Facilitar Movilidad Durante SXSW  

                                                             
AUSTIN, Texas (27 de febrero de 2013) — SXSW llegará pronto, y Capital Metro le invita a la comunidad a ahorrar dinero, y reducir estrés, con tomar la opción de viajar en transporte público durante el festival de 10 días, desde el 8-17 de marzo.

Para acomodar la llegada de visitantes a la ciudad, así como satisfacer las necesidades de los pasajeros regulares de Capital Metro, la agencia planea expandir sus servicios del 8 a 17 de marzo, incluyendo un aumento en la frecuencia y los horarios de algunos servicios.

"Si eres un fanático de SXSW, o simplemente tratando de llegar al trabajar, Capital Metro va a ser la mejor manera de moverse durante el festival," dijo Linda S. Watson, Presidente/CEO de Capital Metro. "Estamos haciendo algunos aumentos en el servicio este año, basado en nuestra experiencia pasada con SXSW, y teniendo en cuenta cosas que aprendimos durante Fórmula 1, para facilitar el movimiento de gente en toda la ciudad".

Además de servicio regular de autobús, tren y servicio paratránsito, Capital Metro ofrece las siguientes opciones adicionales para ayudar los pasajeros:
 

• Frecuencia aumentada en MetroAirport - Ruta 100 viajará hacia y desde el Aeropuerto Internacional Austin-Bergstrom  y el centro cada 15 minutos durante todo el festival, del 8 a 17 de marzo.

• Horario expandido en MetroRail – El horario será expandido el sábado,  9 y 16 de marzo. Durante la semana del 11 a 15 de marzo, frecuencia será aumentada durante el mediodía, con viajes cada 34 minutos. Durante SXSW, el tren funcionará:

• Lunes – jueves, 11-14 de marzo: 6 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
• Viernes, 8 y 15 de marzo: 6 a.m. – medianoche  
• Sábado, 9 y 16 de marzo: 10 a.m. – medianoche  
• No hará servicio de MetroRail el domingo, 10 y 17 de marzo

En adición al estacionamiento disponible en las estaciones Park & Ride en Leander, Lakeline, y Howard, hará estacionamiento temporario durante SXSW cerca de la estación Kramer, cortesía de City Electric Supply, ubicado en 2540 Brockton Drive.
 

• Tomando autobús por la noche – Tome un autobús Night Owl o E-Bus durante SXSW. Night Owls corren desde medianoche hasta 3 a.m., cada noche ecepto en domingo por la noche. El servicio Night Owl fue mejorado en enero, y ahora ofrece frecuencia cada 30-minutos. Adicionalmente, Capital Metro tendrá servicio E-Bus durante los dos fines de semanas de SXSW. Para facilitar movilidad en el centro durante SXSW, la mayoría de rutas en el centro, con la excepción de MetroAirport, serán desviadas y accesibles sobre Guadalupe (dirección sur) y Lavaca (dirección norte), del 8-17 de marzo. MetroAirport viajará a lo largo de Congreso, dentro del centro, para ofrecer mejor acceso a los hoteles en el área.

Capital Metro anticipa transportar muchísima gente durante SXSW. Para mantener condiciones seguras, facilitar movimiento y ofrecer buen servicio los clientes, Capital Metro tendrá voluntarios para asistir a pasajeros en las estaciones de tren y autobús mas ocupadas. La agencia también aumentara servicio en las rutas 1, 3 y 10 para aliviar congestionamiento. Para ayudar aliviar congestionamiento en las rutas 7 y 20, MetroAirport harán cuatro paradas adicionales en Riverside entre Pleasant Valley y el Congreso a lo largo de Riverside durante SXSW. Ruta 100 será desviada a lo largo de Congreso (entre César Chávez y 11) con servicio a los hoteles del centro.

Capital Metro le sugiere a pasajeros que consideren opciones alternativas por en caso se encuentra con un autobús o tren lleno a capacidad, especialmente los que estén viajando con sus bicicletas. Los autobuses de Capital Metro tienen capacidad para cargar dos bicicletas en cada vehículo. Cuando están llenos, los trenes MetroRail tienen capacidad de cargar ocho bicicletas por tren (cuatro por compartimento). Rótulos en cada estación de tren identificaran algunas rutas de autobuses cercanas, y todas estaciones del MetroRail tendrán lugar para estacionar bicicletas.
