Agency competitors anticipating top honors

NEWS FACTS

  • The country's best bus operators and mechanics will compete in the 2008 International Bus Roadeo, on Sunday, May 4, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., at the Toney Burger Center in Austin, sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association and hosted by Capital Metro.
  • Several of Capital Metro's finest will also compete, after winning three firstplace and three second-place trophies in competitions against other state transportation agencies in the Texas State Roadeo in April.
  • Capital Metro Bus Operator Arthur Murillo, who took first place in the 35-foot bus category at the state roadeo this year, has twice before won the international championship, in 2002 and 2005.
  • The prestigious roadeo competition showcases the skills of operators and mechanics throughout the nation and fosters safety, professionalism and general excellence in transit operations.
  • Capital Metro employs a stringent and comprehensive operator training program, which has contributed to a 46 percent reduction in collision accidents over nine years. Capital Metro augmented its training program in 2006 with a bus simulator.
  • Additionally, efficient and thorough maintenance programs have increased the number of miles the Capital Metro¿s fleet can travel before experiencing a mechanical problem by almost 30 percent in 2007 over 2006.
  • The International Bus Roadeo is part of the 2008 American Public Transportation Association Bus & Paratransit Conference, also to be held in Austin and hosted by Capital Metro, May 3-7.
