Girl Scouts All Aboard for Rail Safety

Local Scouts to Tour the MetroRail Train and Earn a New Patch

October 8, 2008

NEWS FACTS

  • The Girl Scouts of Central Texas and Capital Metro are excited to offer local Girl Scouts the opportunity to step aboard the MetroRail train this weekend.
  • The kick-off event on Saturday, Oct. 11, hosted by the Girl Scouts of Central Texas, will debut the new Rail Safety Patch.
  • Girl Scouts will be able to earn the rail safety patch by participating in the following activities: a tour of the MetroRail train with an important video from Operation Lifesaver, career interviews with MetroRail train operators, quiz games and other fun activities.
  • Local Girl Scouts will also have the opportunity to assist in the filming of a rail safety public service announcement.
  • The Girl Scout sponsored event is Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Lakeline Station, located at 13701 Lyndhurst Street.
  • Admission is $3 per Girl Scout and all proceeds will go to the Girl Scouts of Central Texas.
  • The Rail Safety Patch Program helps girls learn about trains and use them safely. Girls will discover the history of the American railroad, discuss the advantages of mass transportation and learn railroad terminology. Girls will also practice practical application by determining routes, visiting stations and more. Upon completion of the patch, Girl Scouts will have a thorough understanding of the railroad system and how to use it safely.
  • The Rail Safety Patch was developed in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Central Texas, Operation Lifesaver and the Grassroots Rail Outreach Working Group (GROW), a community advisory group guided by Capital Metro.
  • Capital Metro has involved the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in the agency's Rail Safety Program in an effort to secure the safety of passengers and the general public near the rail line.
