TRIP PLANNER FAQs

Basic Steps to Plan a Trip?

1 – Specify where you are starting from there are three ways to do this, you can enter the street address, intersection of two streets or a landmark.

Enter Starting Point or Origin (see How to enter locations for help).

2 – Specify where you want to go with either by street address, intersection or landmark.

Enter Ending Point or Destination (see How to enter locations for help).

3 – Enter the Date and Time of travel – when you want to make your trip.

3a - Enter Date in the MM/DD/YY format.
Note: Enter the date of the trip if it is other than today. The planner will automatically assume you are traveling on the current date of when you started to plan this trip.

3b - Enter the Time in the HH:MM AM/PM format.
Note: The space between the hours and am/pm must be in the entry.

3c - Select whether you are Arriving at the Ending Point/Destination or Departing from the Starting Point/Origin.
Note: Your leaving time or arrival time has a major impact on the type of trip that is planned for you. If you are flexible in your time schedule, you may want to try a somewhat different time and submit your request again.

4 – Select the priority for results of the itineraries – Minimize by Time, Transfer or Walking.

Things to Know About Minimized by Priorities:
Time = least amount of overall time over the entire trip.
Transfer = least amount of transfers, overall time may become longer because time to travel in a bus is faster than walking.
Walking = more time of overall trip and more transfers, to accommodate least amount of walking.

Note: The trip planner will default to minimize transfers over the entire trip unless specified otherwise.

5 – Select the Farthest distance to walk – this will be the farthest distance you want to walk to or from the transit stop.

Note: The minimum is one-quarter mile, the maximum is one mile, default is three-quarter mile.

6 – Select “Plan Trip” button to submit the query to the database.

I already know what routes I want to use, I just need more detailed information?

1 – Complete steps 1-5 of the “Basic Steps to Plan a Trip”.

6 – Exclude UT/AISD Shuttles – The itinerary selection tool takes into account all the routes available near your origin and destination based on the time of travel. Because of this the UT or AISD routes may come up in the itinerary, if you don’t want them to be part of the solution then check the box to take them out.

7 – Select “Plan Trip” button to submit the query to the database.

How do I easily plan a return trip?

From the itinerary results page there is a link at the top of the page “Plan Return Trip”, this will flip the origin and destinations from your query and send you back to the main trip planner page so you can modify the date and time or any other criteria as necessary.

Walking directions state “Walk a short distance…”, what is a “short distance”?

The walking directions are a calculation of the distance to travel by walking based on the average of 16-20 city blocks in a mile. Some blocks are standard size (i.e. downtown), some blocks are longer in length. The 16-20 blocks per mile is calculate based on the average size of the majority of the blocks.

The representation of a short distance is between 0.0 and .049 miles (approximately 0-290 ft. or 0 – 1 blocks.)
