CapMetro Demand Response North Base

We aim to meet the demands of our growing Demand Response ridership (CapMetro Access & Pickup Services) with a sustainably built and thoughtfully designed operational facility, workplace and warehouse that generates workforce opportunities and supports the local community. This project is partially funded by a $20 million dollar grant from the Federal Transit Administration.

  • Where? 25 acres of undeveloped land at 10805 Cameron Rd (the intersection of Cameron Rd & Blue Goose Rd)
  • When? Construction will take place from 2026-2028
  • Why? To accommodate our expanding fleet, consolidate CapMetro leased sites, create efficient warehouse operations, generate jobs, expand transit access and create a multi-use public space to benefit the community
  • What can I expect? During construction, we will make improvements to the roadways and traffic control as well as connect and lay utility lines from outside the property to the facility.

Community Space

The facility will include a multi-use community space that can be reserved by the public. The details are still under development.

Job Creation

We'll create new roles for operators, vehicle technicians, dispatchers, vendors, contractors and administrative staff. Construction of the facility will also boost employment opportunities. These jobs will provide competitive salaries and benefits and help support the local economy long after the building is complete.

Sustainability

In alignment with CapMetro's Sustainability Vision Plan, the facility will incorporate several sustainable features, such as energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems, water conservation measures, drought tolerant and native landscaping and more.

What is Demand Response? 

  • CapMetro's Demand Response department includes our Pickup and Access services, which are on-demand services for customers with qualifying disabilities or living in select areas.

What is the purpose of the project? 

  • Once construction is complete, the new facility will allow CapMetro to provide increased public transit services such as Access and Pickup services for the greater region. 

How long will construction take? 

  • Construction of Phase 1 will begin Spring 2026 and be completed later in 2028.

How did this area get selected? 

  • Because the northeast area of Austin and Travis County is anticipated to grow dramatically over the next few decades, locating the new Demand Response North facility here will allow CapMetro be strategically located to serve the growing region. 

How is this project funded?  

  • The Federal Transit Administration has provided a $20 million grant, with the remaining funding provided by local tax dollars.
  • Funding partnerships with the City of Austin for portion of the water line construction, and with Travis County for certain roadway and traffic improvements are included.  

What are environmental impacts of the project?  

  • An categorical exclusion per the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) was conducted demonstrating no significant adverse impacts from this project; this was approved by the Federal Transit Administration.

How will construction impact our roads/traffic? 

  • Part of the construction project includes widening a portion of Cameron road for turn lanes, intersection improvements and new traffic control devices at Cameron Rd and Blue Goose Rd, plus new utility connections. This work will require temporary traffic detours.

Will construction traffic go through my neighborhood?  

  • A temporary increase in construction traffic is anticipated on Cameron Rd, Blue Goose Road, and Giles Road.  County regulations currently prohibit large trucks and trailers on Springdale Road (between Hwy 290 and Cameron Rd).

Does this project displace residences or businesses. 

  • No residences or businesses were displaced for this project.

Impacts to current Demand Response service are not anticipated during construction of this facility.
