Cap Metro Ridership Numbers Take Big Leap in April

Cap Remap changes lead to 8.6% increase over last year

AUSTIN, Texas - Capital Metro today released ridership figures for April, announcing an 8.6% increase over the same month in 2018. Since last June's Cap Remap, which was the most significant change to the area's bus system in agency history, total ridership has increased by 4%.

April's ridership increases reflect positive growth across Capital Metro's entire transit system:

  • Weekday ridership was up 4.4%.
  • Saturday ridership was up 11.7%.
  • Sunday ridership was up 20%.
  • MetroExpress ridership was up 19.8%.
  • MetroRapid ridership was up 19%.

Capital Metro is among just a handful of transit agencies nationwide seeing similar increases. Cap Remap changes included tripling the number of MetroBus routes that operate every 15 minutes, as well as adding frequency to weekend service. The agency has seen systemwide ridership increases in 10 of the 11 months since the implementation of Cap Remap in June 2018. The overhaul of its bus network laid the groundwork for a strong system of frequent and reliable public transportation, which has been complemented by initiatives that provide students with free service and brought improvements to amenities like bus shelters and pedestrian access to stops and stations.

“These increases are great news for Capital Metro and, more importantly, for the people of Central Texas,” said Randy Clarke, president and CEO of Capital Metro. “Our customers are responding to the excellent service we provide, and this is further evidence that there is demand for good transit service. If you provide people better choices, they'll take you up on it.”

Optimizing the city's local bus network is one component of Cap Metro's plan to meet the transportation needs of the rapidly growing region. Project Connect, the region's long-term vision for a high-capacity transit system, will build on that network and provide an even more robust regional transit service.
