CapMetro Adjusts Transit Service on September 19

Schedule changes to bring more reliable service to customers

AUSTIN, TX (September 3, 2021) – On Sunday, September 19, CapMetro will adjust its service schedule to provide more reliable service to its customers. The changes come as a result of labor shortages and the continued impacts of Covid-19 the agency is experiencing, and the new schedule is designed to use current staffing levels for consistent service across the transit network.

The changes primarily involve how often individual routes operate. All 15 routes in the High-Frequency Network will have changes in frequency either on the weekend or all week long. A few of these routes have been running at 10-to-12-minute frequencies and are returning to 15. Others will operate at reduced frequencies, either every 20 or 30 minutes.
E-Bus service is suspended for the fall semester, with CapMetro’s Night Owl routes supplementing the suspended E-Bus routes.

“We are aware that our bus service isn’t meeting our standards, and we want to right-size our service commitments to meet our operational capacity,” said Dottie Watkins CapMetro’s Chief Operating Officer. “Our goal with these service reductions is to return to a state of giving the community reliable service. We are actively recruiting both bus operators and mechanics and will add services back in as we can.”

To ensure best possible service, CapMetro needs to match its schedules with the number of buses on the road. This is complicated by the fact CapMetro is facing a persistent staffing shortage due to COVID-19 impacts, which are preventing the transit agency from fulfilling the service the community has come to expect. Labor shortages are common across the nation at transit agencies, as well as many other industries.

CapMetro is actively recruiting operators and mechanics, and qualified candidates can earn up to a $3,500 hiring bonus and will be offered full benefits, including medical, dental, vision and more.
