CapMetro to Offer Fare-Free Service in October

Fare suspension to mitigate service impacts

AUSTIN, Texas (September 24, 2021) - CapMetro will implement free fares on all services except MetroBike for all customers from October 1 – 31. The fare suspension is being put in place to thank customers as the agency works to mitigate the service impacts resulting from staff shortages and to encourage customers to return to transit as our economy recovers from Covid-19.

CapMetro recognizes the challenges the agency’s current level of service has brought to the community, and implementing free fares for a period of time is a small way to ease those challenges.

CapMetro adjusted its service schedule on September 19 to provide more reliable service to its customers. The new schedule is designed to use current staffing levels to provide consistent service across the transit network.

The transit agency is also actively recruiting new team members, including operators and mechanics. Many industries across the country have experienced personnel impacts during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the transit industry is no exception.

CapMetro operators and mechanics have significant room for growth within the agency and are provided professional development and training opportunities. Some qualified candidates can earn up to a $3,500 hiring bonus, and all employees are offered full benefits, including medical, dental, vision and more.

By adding qualified and talented members to its driving and mechanical fleet, the agency is dedicated to bringing service levels back to the high standards the Central Texas community is accustomed to as soon as possible.
